OBIO applauds federal funding for Natural Products Canada
Increasing the economic value of Canada’s investments in science and technology by enhancing commercial successes in the natural products sector.
February 12, 2016 – Toronto Ontario. Today, the Ontario Bioscience Innovation Organization welcomes the creation of Natural Products Canada Inc. (NPC), the nation’s newest Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research.
The Government of Canada’s Networks of Centres of Excellence has committed $14 million over 5 years to fund NPC’s efforts to establish Canada as a global leader in the development and commercialization of natural products.
“I welcome OBIO as a founding member of NPC,” said Shelley King, Chief Executive Officer, Natural Products Canada Inc. “The OBIO is already recognized for its contribution to building Ontario’s health science ecosystem. We look forward to their leadership in facilitating the commercial success of Ontario companies in the natural products markets.”
Canada’s four regional NPC nodes involve AgWest Bio as NPC West, the Ontario Bioscience Innovation Organization (OBIO) as NPC Ontario, the Institute for Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF) as NPC Quebec, and the Prince Edward Island BioAlliance as NPC Atlantic.
“OBIO is very excited to be part of a national network of partners relevant to the natural products sector,” said Gail Garland, CEO OBIO. “By working together we will identify the opportunities and coordinate execution of a strategy that achieves commercial success for natural product companies and deliver economic and health benefits to Ontario and Ontarians.”
